ARTICLE for YOUR APPRVAL:
The United Nations: “Our United Nations!”
United Nations Day (UN-Day), October 24th 2009.
64th Anniversary of "Our" United Nations
UN-Day Then...
In the spring of 1945, representatives of fifty nations gathered in San Francisco to put the final touches to a document of far-reaching consequences--the Charter of the United Nations.
Enthusiastically supported by the United States, the U.N. Charter went into effect on October 24, 1945.
Two years later the U.N. General Assembly adopted a U.S.-sponsored resolution declaring October 24th United Nations Day, to be commemorated annually by all member-states of the United Nations.
Since 1947, U.N. Day has been observed in nations large and small around the world. In the 1950’s and 60’s, UN Day was high on the international agenda and generated hope and joy.
However, the importance of UN-Day has been gradually decreasing, Diplomats and people losing hope and faith by the perceived growing irrelevance of inabilities of the UN to solve (all) our world problems.
UN-Day NOW
However, times are changing, and the UN proved to be a lasting and resilient global organization, and more than ever, playing its guiding role in world affairs. But it still dealing only with its 192 member states.
These last years, the UN has discovered the importance of civil society. Under Secretary General Kofi Annan, continued under current Secretary General Ban ki-Moon; the UN have opened up cooperation with many NGO’s and general civil society organization.
The new attractive UN website speaks directly to the world’s people: “Welcome to the UN, it is your world”.
And here, we come into play: We most definitely got that message.
So we, a group of independent friends of the United Nations, have spontaneously come together to answer that call. We know we can strengthen the UN by connecting the people of ‘our’ world to ‘our’ United Nations.
By beginning to claim ‘Our UN” rather than relating emotionless to ‘the’ distant UN; we start fully taking ownership in ‘our United Nations’.
Nowadays UN-Day is largely unknown for most people. By transforming it into a day when we will celebrate globally our ‘common humanity’ in all its aspects; we can realize the missing but crucial connection.
With a thoughtful and enthusiastic individual and collective push, we get it back where it belongs: High on the agenda.
What a sound foundation this would offer ‘our’ UN!
Here is the UN-Day 09 supporting action we have in mind:
Our objectives for upcoming UN-Day, October 24th 2009:
1- Testing out the idea of transforming UN-Day.
